On September 12, 2016, Detective Margulis, along with CDS Detection K9 partner Pele were called to assist members of the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearmís & Explosives (ATF) with a vehicle stop. Detective Margulis and his CDS Detection K9 partner Pele conducted a CDS sniff of a silver Lexus 4D. During this sniff, Pele alerted to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance.      A short time later, Detective Margulis and K9 Pele where asked to assist ATF with a second vehicle stop. Detective Margulis and K9 Pele conducted a CDS sniff on a black Audi 4D. During this sniff K9 Pele alerted to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance. K9 Pele was placed inside the vehicle and again alerted to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance. A search of the vehicle was conducted. Located in the trunk was a large amount of United States currency. The two occupants of the vehicle where detained.

Based on the above two alerts by K9 Pele and the seizure of cocaine HCL and United States currency, Special Agents of ATF where able to obtain search warrants for several residences.

On September 13, 2016, Detective Margulis and K9 Pele where asked to assist ATF with a search warrant of an apartment. During this sniff Pele alerted to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance. While in the master bedroom closet Pele had increased sniffing with his mouth closed and tail wagging as he sniffed a large black suitcase. Pele came to a final indication by scratching this suitcase. Pele then began to bite the left side of the suitcase. Pele bit the suitcase and attempted to pull it away from the wall. This scratching and biting is a trained response to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance. A search of the suitcase revealed approximately three kilograms (3,000.0 grams) of suspected CDS cocaine HCL. They continued their sniff of the apartment. While in bedroom 2, Pele alerted to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance.

Pele pulled to the bathroom. Pele had increased sniffing with his mouth closed and tail wagging as he sniffed the vanity. Pele came to a final indication by scratching the cabinet doors below the sink. A search of the bathroom vanity was conducted. Hidden up under the sink was approximately 500.0 grams of cocaine HCL. Based on the alerts by CDS Detection K9 Pele, Special Agents of the ATF were able to obtain search and seizure warrants for several residences. During these search warrants agents seized cocaine HCL, numerous firearms and United States currency. The cocaine HCL seized during these search warrants has an approximate street value of $1,000,000.00. Four suspects were arrested and are awaiting federal drug charges. These seizures would possibly not have occurred had it not been for the alerts by K9 Pele.
