3rd Quarter Patrol Case
Officer Lance Bordenet and K9 Axxel
On August 30, 2017 at approximately 0315 hours Officer Lance Bordenet and his K-9 partner “Axxel” responded to a suspicious person call in the area of Woodhaven Court in Woodbridge. While on scene, Officer Bordenet discovered that two suspects entered a parked vehicle and stole a semi-automatic pistol. Officer Bordenet requested patrol units to set up a perimeter for a canine track. Prior to casting K-9 Axxel, another officer observed two males meeting the description of the suspects fleeing in close proximity to the original crime scene. Officer Bordenet, K-9 Axxel and two backup officers relocated to the point last seen and began their track.
The track ran through multiple backyards, over three fences, through a section of woods, into and across a creek bed, and down the hard surface of a residential street. After tracking for approximately 6/10th of a mile, the team reached a dimly lit backyard and K-9 Axxel began to show behavior to indicate he was close to the suspects. At that point in time Officer Bordenet observed one of the suspects jump a fence and flee from the officers. Officer Bordenet provided the suspect an opportunity to surrender and gave the appropriate canine warnings, however the suspect continued to flee into the wood line. Officer Bordenet released K-9 Axxel, who jumped the fence and apprehended the suspect in the woods. After the suspect was secured in handcuffs, officers located the pistol within a few feet of the suspect.
Without the efforts of this K-9 team, an armed suspect would certainly have escaped and the weapon would not have been recovered.
