3rd Quarter Patrol Case

3rd Quarter Detective Michael Margulis & K9 Pele Prince George’s Co Police, MD

     On August 31, 2017, Detective Margulis, along with CDS Detection K9 partner Pele were asked to assist members of the Drug Enforcement Administration Group 31 with a Federal search and seizure warrant. Detective Margulis and his CDS Detection K9 partner Pele conducted a CDS sniff of a residence in Hyattsville, Prince George’s County, Maryland.  The residence was filled with clutter.  During this sniff, Pele while working off lead alerted to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance in the master bedroom. Pele came to a final indication by scratching the wall/rear of a two drawer file cabinet.  A search of that area revealed a bag hidden behind the file cabinet.  A search of the bag revealed a large amount of United States currency.  They continued their sniff of the master bedroom with Pele on lead.  During this sniff Pele again alerted to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance.  Pele came to a final indication by scratching the right middle dresser drawer.  A search of the dresser drawer revealed a large amount of United States currency.  While leaving the bedroom Pele alerted with a head pop as he passed by the closet door.  Pele entered the closet attempting to climb over clutter.  Pele did not come to a final indication.  A search of the closet revealed a bag containing a large amount of United States currency.  They continued their sniff of the first level with Pele on lead.  Pele alerted to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance under the dining room table.  Pele came to a final indication by scratching a bag causing it to fall off the chair.  Pele continued to scratch and bite the bag.  A search of the bag revealed suspected CDS cocaine.  They continued their sniff of the first level with Pele on lead.  Pele again alerted to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance.  Pele came to a final indication by scratching a storage box.  A search of the storage box revealed suspected CDS marijuana.  They continued their sniff of the basement with Pele off lead.  The basement was filled with clutter.  Pele alerted to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance.  Pele climbed over a large amount of clutter.  Pele came to a final indication by scratching and biting a storage container.  A search of the storage container revealed suspected CDS marijuana.  They continued their sniff of the living room with Pele on lead.  Pele alerted to the odor of a controlled dangerous substance.  Pele stuck his nose behind the sofa.  Pele came to a final indication by scratching the sofa/wall.  A search behind the sofa revealed a hidden plastic bag.  A search of the bag revealed a large amount of suspected CDS cocaine HCL and United States currency.
The suspected CDS Cocaine HCL and marijuana were both field tested with the results indicating positive for cocaine and marijuana. 

     Based on Pele’s alerts, officers & agents were able to locate and seize approximately 650 grams of cocaine HCL, 1,150 grams of marijuana and approximately $215,000.00 United States currency.  

     The suspected CDS cocaine has an approximate street value of $130,000.00. The suspected CDS marijuana has an approximate street value of $23,000.00.
